CT Scan, also known as a CAT Scan, stands for "computerized axial tomography." A CT Scan
is a diagnostic test that combines X-ray with computer technology. A series of X-ray beams
from many different angles are used to create cross-sectional images of the patient's body.
These images are assembled in a computer into a three-dimensional picture that can display
organs, bones, and tissues in great detail.
A CT scan provides excellent information on anatomical features and tissue density, which
allows for the detection of tumors, and sometimes the ability to distinguish between malignant
and benign tumors. CT scans can also detect calcium deposits, cysts, and abscesses. The test
is painless and takes anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour, depending on the diagnosis.
