MRI allows doctors to see detailed images inside the body. It helps detect disease
or injury of bones and soft tissues (muscles, organs, nerves, etc.) without the need
for exploratory surgery or biopsy.
At Holzer Clinic, there are two different options for an MRI: Traditional and Open.
Both units are state-of-the-art and produce images that are read by board certified
radiologists.
The traditional MRI, housed at the Main facility in Gallipolos, has a stronger
magnet than the Open unit and therefore, produces clearer images for physicians to
read. For many patients, this option is the best. On the other hand, there are patients
who may choose the Open MRI as their best option. The open MRI is especially beneficial
to those patients who are claustrophobic or extremely overweight. If you need an MRI,
your doctor can help you determine which option is right for you.
What happens during a MRI exam?
The MRI exam is a simple and painless procedure. The MRI technologist or an assistant
will help you lie down on the scanning bed. Once you are comfortable, usually with the
help of some pillows and pads, you and the scanning bed will be moved into the magnet.
During the exam there is nothing to do but lie quietly, breath normally and relax. Stereo
music is provided so that you can relax and try to stay as still as possible. Movement
will blur the image just like a photograph. You will hear a thumping sound while you are
in the magnet. The thumps are normal mechanical noises that the imager makes while it is
working. The technologist will be outside the magnet room and will be able to see and
hear you at all times. The exam will take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the information
your doctor requires.
